Courageous Conversations: Formative Assessment vs. Grading

Newsela

We have a new program to use across all content areas to bring non-fiction articles to students at their lexiles.  It also provides an assessment of the learning.  Some of teachers in our district are using this extensively and are excited about this opportunity.  This is a great activity for students to complete when they come to class and you are working on attendance, checking in with students, or to use as a reading assignment and class discussion.  

The information regarding set-up for this program will be avaiable here and can be completed on their iPads.

Setting up IXL

Set up your instructor accounts:

Your account activation key is STLOUIS738.

1. The first step is to create and activate an IXL account. If you have already joined your organization's account (by entering an activation key at any time in the past), there is no need to do anything more. Simply sign in to IXL as usual, and your account will be active. Skip down to step 2.  If you don't have an IXL account  • Go to www.ixl.com/membership/school/activate • Enter your activation key STLOUIS738. • Fill out the form and click Create account. • Your account will now be active. If you already have an IXL account  • Sign in to IXL at www.ixl.com • Click the link to enter an activation key near the top of your page. • OR, navigate to the Account Management page and click the link to enter an activation key. • Enter STLOUIS738 in the field that appears and click Submit. • Your account will now be active. 2. Next, you will need to set up your student roster. • Sign in to your IXL instructor account at www.ixl.com/signin/isd2142 • Click on the Roster tab. • Enter the last name or student ID number of your first student. As you type, IXL will search your school's master student list and try to auto-complete each entry for you. Please be patient; it may take a few seconds for the match to appear. • If you see a match, click that row to add the student to your roster. Otherwise, finish entering the student's information, then click "Save." • A new row will appear. Continue entering information for each student. • Make sure that each student signs in every time they practice so that you can track their progress!

1. Which test do I have to administer?

• Students in grades 3–8 have two Mathematics OLPA testing opportunities, and students in grades 3–8 and 10 have one Reading OLPA testing opportunity.

2. When do I have to administer it?

The Reading and Mathematics OLPA testing window is open through Friday, February 20. All testing must be completed by the end of the testing window. Public school students in eligible grades are automatically eligible for OLPA; districts do not have to inform MDE that their students will or will not participate.

• Students have 30 days to complete an OLPA test once it is started; the test will expire after 30 days.
•  For Mathematics OLPA, if the test is not completed, the student will not be eligible for the second mathematics opportunity until the test expires and 14 calendar days have elapsed.
• There are 14 calendar days required between testing opportunities. If the district is providing a second Mathematics OLPA opportunity for students, the first opportunity must be completed and submitted by Thursday, February 5, in order to complete another opportunity on the last day of the testing window

4. What computers do the kids use in our school and are they ready?

• The students should be able to use the classroom computers, laptops, or computer lab.
